Published in ACS Nano: Recent Advances in Lab-on-a-particle Technology Unlocks Simplified Workflows for Single-cell Research

Nanovials are microparticles with cavities that act as miniature test tubes for single cells, storing information about the cell's functions (e.g. secreted products) on their surfaces, and analyzed by instruments already in labs, like flow cytometers.

This new nanovial formulation, with local gelatin functionalized in the cavity achieves: (1) improved loading of single cells beating Poisson loading limits, and (2) an emulsion-free workflow with reduced cross-talk of secreted antibodies. The nanovials are sorted using standard fluorescence activated cell sorters (e.g. the Sony SH800 in this work).
